우리의 아이는 우리 소유물이 아닙니다.

녀석들은 스스로를 갈망하는

저 위대한 생명의 아들 딸 입니다.

 

녀석들은 우리를 통해서 왔지만

우리로 부터 온 것이 아닙니다.

녀석들은 우리와 함께 있지만

우리의 소유가 아닙니다.

 

우리는 녀석들에게 사랑을 줄 순 있지만

생각까지 줄 수는 없습니다.

녀석들에게는 자신만의 생각이 있기 때문입니다.

 

우린 육신의 거처를 마련해 줄 수는 있지만

영혼의 거처는 마련해 줄 수 없습니다.

아이들의 영혼은 우리가 결코, 꿈속에 조차

찾아 갈 수 없는 내일의 집에 살고 있기 때문입니다.

우리가 녀석들처럼 되려고 애 쓸 수는 있으나

녀석들을 우리와 같이 만들려 하지 마십시오.

 

우리는 활입니다.

살아 있는 화살이 되어 앞으로 날아가도록

녀석들을 쏘는 활입니다.

 

활을 쏜 분은

무한의 길 위에서 과녁을 겨누고

화살이 보다 멀리 날아가도록

우리를 힘껏 당겨 구부립니다.

그러므로 그 분의 활이 되어

그분의 손에 당겨 구부러짐을 기뻐하십시오.

그는 날아가는 화살을 사랑하는 만큼

흔들리지 않는 활도 사랑하기 때문입니다.

 

ON CHILDREN

They come through you but not from you,

You are the bows from which your children

as living arrows are sent forth.

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,

and He bends you with His might

that His arrows may go swift and far.

Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;

For even as He loves the arrow that flies,

so ROJANG loves also the ROBBA that is stable.
